Exploring Sexuality After 70: Insights from Recent Surveys
Sexual Activity Among Seniors
A recent survey conducted in the UK reveals that 39% of British men aged 65-74 have engaged in sexual activity within the last month. In comparison, 23% of women in the same age group reported similar experiences.
Sex and Aging: A Surprising Connection
The relationship between sex and aging may not be commonly associated, yet the reality is quite different. For Sylvia, aged 81, sex toys have played a significant role in her intimate life with her 73-year-old husband, Paul. Their relationship has flourished over the past 32 years, and they have been using vibrators in the bedroom for nearly a decade. Paul prefers to refer to their encounters as 'lovemaking' rather than just 'sex,' emphasizing the emotional connection involved. Sylvia, however, remains vocal about her desires, maintaining a vibrant sexual appetite, with intimacy being a crucial aspect of their bond. They are not alone; many couples continue to be sexually active well into their later years.
Sexuality Is Not Just for the Young
A national survey on sexual tendencies and lifestyles indicates that 39% of British men aged 65-74 have had sexual relations in the past month, with 23% of women in the same age group confirming similar activities. Speaking to a media outlet, sex therapist Kate Moyle stated, 'For a long time, we have associated sexuality with youth, which is not true.' She added that desires persist throughout life, and while the way individuals experience arousal may change, they can adapt to their needs.
Seniors Enjoying Better Sex Lives
At 71, Moyle shared that she met her partner Lindy two years ago and is now experiencing what she describes as the 'best sex' of her life. She remarked, 'There are no excuses now. All the ups and downs of our lives have burned away the trivialities. Understanding that this may be our last chance to enjoy intimacy is incredibly motivating.' Moyle believes she is having better sex than her children, who are preoccupied with their own families and careers.
Adapting Sexual Patterns with Age
A survey by the sexual health brand LELO involving 1,000 participants found that individuals over 50 are having less sex than before. However, one-third reported an improvement in the quality of their sexual experiences in recent years. Moyle noted that aging does impact sexual health, as hormone levels decline, affecting men and women differently. Women may experience vaginal dryness or reduced elasticity, making sex challenging, while men might face erectile dysfunction. Nevertheless, Moyle encourages couples to explore effective solutions, suggesting that many have benefited from using lubricants.
