Exploring New Horizons: India and Zanzibar Strengthen Educational Ties

Strengthening Bilateral Relations

New Delhi: On Sunday, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in discussions with Zanzibar's President Hussein Ali Mwinyi, focusing on enhancing bilateral collaboration in various sectors such as higher education, capacity building, health, water supply, and digital technology.

Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania, has been under Mwinyi's presidency since 2020.

India maintains strong ties with Zanzibar, particularly in education, highlighted by the establishment of an IIT Madras campus in the region in October 2023.

Jaishankar shared on social media that the discussions aimed at expanding cooperation in higher education, health, AI, and other critical sectors.

He emphasized that the IIT Madras campus in Zanzibar exemplifies India's commitment to supporting Africa's educational and developmental goals.

Mwinyi is currently visiting India.

In a separate meeting, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan also held fruitful discussions with Mwinyi.

This meeting underscored the long-standing partnership between India and Tanzania, as well as the unique relationship India has with Zanzibar, which is deeply rooted in historical maritime, cultural, and interpersonal connections.

The two leaders explored avenues to bolster cooperation in trade, investment, tourism, education, technology, and multilateral engagements.

The Vice President reiterated India's dedication to collaborating with Tanzania and Zanzibar to achieve mutual development goals through enhanced cooperation in priority areas.
