How to Play NYT Connections

Players receive a grid filled with words and must identify the hidden connections among them. Consider synonyms, antonyms, and word families to solve the puzzle. If you encounter difficulties, hints are available within the game. You can also track your daily progress and challenge friends or other players to see who can solve the most puzzles.

A new puzzle is released daily at midnight, accessible via the NYT website or app. The objective is to organize 16 words into four groups of four based on their connections. Categories can include clickable items, names of research study participants, or words associated with body parts.

Each puzzle has a single solution, so be cautious of words that may fit into multiple categories. You can rearrange words to discover their connections.

The groups are color-coded, with yellow typically being the easiest, blue and green in the middle, and purple often the most challenging, often involving wordplay.

Select four words that you believe belong together and click the ‘Submit’ button. Incorrect guesses will cost you a life. If you're close to forming a correct group, a message may indicate that you're just one word away from success, but you'll still need to decide which word to swap. Making four mistakes results in game over.
