Experts Discuss Plastic Pollution at Environmental Forum in Indore

Significance of Addressing Plastic Pollution
On the fourth day of the weekly environmental discussion organized by the Jimmy and Janak Magilligan Foundation, a special forum was held at Malwanchal University in Indore to commemorate World Environment Day. The focus was on "Eliminating Plastic Pollution and Enhancing the Environment," where environmental specialists addressed the youth.
Padma Shri Dr. Janak Palta Magilligan emphasized that the warnings about environmental protection and the dangers of plastic have been echoed since the 1992 World Environment Conference in Brazil. He remarked, "We often speak of global welfare and harmony among all beings, but it is we who must take action. Plastic pollution is akin to poison for both the environment and our bodies. Microplastics are now infiltrating our food and, consequently, our bodies."
Health Risks and the Need for Action
He pointed out that this pollution is a significant contributor to serious health issues, including heart disease. "Until we cease our reliance on plastic, we cannot curb plastic pollution. If we wish to ensure clean water and air for future generations, we must play a crucial role in stopping plastic pollution," he stated.
Pro Vice Chancellor Dr. Ramgulam Rajdhan added that environmental protection should not be limited to a single day; rather, it requires daily commitment to improve our surroundings. "Only by adopting a plastic-free lifestyle can we eliminate this pollution. It is essential for the younger generation to take the lead in this endeavor."
The Role of Youth in Environmental Conservation
Environmentalist and former director of IIT BHU and Hyderabad, Prof. Rajiv Sanghal, remarked that nature operates in a cycle of cooperation, where everything supports one another. He noted that the most irresponsible generation is the current one, which is jeopardizing the environmental structure built over thousands of years. "Plastic has become an integral part of our lives, and this pollution is destroying our rivers and ecosystems," he warned.
He urged the current generation to stop using plastic water bottles as a small yet significant step towards environmental conservation. The youth must step forward to improve the environment. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Dr. R.C. Yadav, Additional Director of the Index Group, Dr. Prem Nyati, Vice Dean of Index Medical College, and many others. Dr. Ram Gulam expressed gratitude, and all attendees pledged to avoid drinking packaged water.
