Exciting Update for Indian Football Fans: FIFA World Cup 2026 Broadcast Rights Finalized
FIFA World Cup 2026 Broadcast News
Great news for football enthusiasts in India! The uncertainty surrounding the television broadcast of the FIFA World Cup 2026 is finally resolving. Shaji Prabhakaran, the former General Secretary of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), has provided a significant update. He confirmed that the negotiations for the broadcast rights of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in India have concluded, and an official announcement is imminent.
In a recent post on 'X' (formerly known as Twitter), Prabhakaran stated: "Fantastic news for Indian football fans! The wait is over. Discussions are finalized, and we anticipate an official announcement regarding the broadcast partner for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in India next week! After months of uncertainty, fans can finally relax; the World Cup will be fully accessible in India. Prepare for the largest World Cup in history!"
In addition to his role at AIFF, Prabhakaran is the founder and president of the 'Association for Sports Industry Professionals' (ASIP), which operates under the 'Khel India Sports Foundation' (KISF). ASIP is a non-profit organization dedicated to developing sports at the grassroots level and empowering women in sports, aiming to promote professional excellence and contribute to the overall growth of the sports industry.
Concerns had recently arisen regarding the accessibility of the 2026 FIFA World Cup coverage for Indian audiences. Earlier in May, the Delhi High Court issued a notice to the Central Government and Prasar Bharati in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed to ensure the tournament is broadcast in India, particularly on free-to-air channels like Doordarshan and DD Sports. The writ petition, submitted by advocate Avadhesh Bairwa under Article 226 of the Constitution, was reviewed by Justice Purushaindra Kumar Kaurav.
The FIFA World Cup is scheduled to commence on June 11 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. This tournament marks the first time it will be hosted across 16 cities in three different countries, lasting approximately a month and a half, with the final match set for July 19. Notably, this edition will feature 48 teams competing, an increase from the usual 32.
Initially, FIFA began the process of selling broadcast rights for both the 2026 and 2030 World Cups in India, with a starting price of $100 million (around ₹930 crore). However, there was no interest from any companies. Consequently, FIFA reduced the price to $35 million, but this did not resolve the situation, leading to the recent uncertainty.
