Excitement Builds as Puri Prepares for the Grand Rath Yatra
Chariot Construction Underway for Upcoming Festival
Puri: The administration of the Jagannath temple in Puri, Odisha, has reported significant progress in the construction of three chariots for the upcoming Rath Yatra next month, praising the skilled carpenters involved in the project.
The Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) expressed their appreciation as the town celebrated the 'Bhaunri' festival on Monday, marking the 19th day of the chariot construction that commenced on April 30 during Akshaya Tritiya.
Sources from SJTA revealed that approximately 200 individuals, including 78 'Maharana Sevak' (carpenter servitors), are actively participating in this year's chariot-making efforts.
Arabinda Padheee, the chief administrative officer of SJTA, stated, “The organic craftsmanship of the chariots by various servitors and stakeholders reflects the true essence of the intangible heritage of Jagannath culture. The entire process is progressing smoothly.”
He visited the 'Rath Khala', the site where the chariots are being built, located near the palace of Puri's titular king.
During the 'Bhaunri' festival, the 26 wheels of the three chariots are fitted with wooden axles following a special 'puja'.
Bijay Mohapatra, the chief carpenter for Lord Jagannath's Nandighosh chariot, noted, “The three chariots—Nandighosh for Lord Jagannath, Taladwaja for Lord Balabhadra, and Darpa Dalan for Devi Subhadra—are being constructed separately at the Rath Khala.”
The 'Bhaunri' festival also signifies the conclusion of the 'chandan' yatra for Lord Jagannath.
This festival is a significant event in Puri, prompting the police to implement comprehensive security measures, as confirmed by a senior SJTA official.
The annual Rath Yatra is set to take place on June 27 this year.
