Key Financial Updates for May 2026
As is customary, the first day of the month has brought several changes affecting the finances of the common man. Starting May 1, 2026, the prices of both commercial and small LPG cylinders have increased. Additionally, there have been modifications to the rules regarding LPG delivery. Let's delve into the significant changes that could impact your financial health from today.
Major Changes Implemented:
- OTP Required for Gas Delivery: A new rule mandates that an OTP will be sent to your mobile phone when receiving a gas cylinder. The delivery will only occur once you present this OTP to the delivery person, aimed at preventing theft and incorrect deliveries.
- Increased LPG Cylinder Prices: The price of the 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder has been raised to approximately ₹993. While the cost of the 14.2 kg domestic cylinder remains unchanged for now, the rise in gas prices for hotels and restaurants may lead to higher dining costs.
- Changes in ATM Withdrawal Rules: The regulations for ATM usage have tightened. Users will only receive a limited number of free transactions per month, after which a fee of ₹23 will apply for each withdrawal. Additionally, if a transaction fails due to insufficient balance, a charge of around ₹25 will be incurred.
- Enhanced Security for UPI Payments: Making payments via UPI will now require more than just entering a PIN; an additional verification step, such as biometric authentication, may be necessary to reduce online fraud.
- Duty on Jet Fuel Established: The government has set a duty of ₹33 per liter on the export of aviation fuel. Fortunately, the prices for domestic flights remain unchanged, which may help keep airfare stable for the time being.
- New Regulations for Online Gaming: Stricter rules have been introduced for online gaming, categorizing games into three types: money games, social games, and esports. Games involving monetary stakes will require registration and will be closely monitored.
- Reduced Benefits for Credit Cards: Starting today, several banks have revised their credit card policies. Rewards points for paying utility bills or rent may be reduced, and in some cases, additional charges may apply.
