On Wednesday, Indian shooter Esha Singh made headlines by breaking the world record in the women's 25-metre pistol event at the ISSF World Cup held in Munich. Competing against notable athletes, including the reigning Olympic champion Yang Ji-in, Esha displayed remarkable composure during the elimination rounds, ultimately scoring 43 out of 50 in the final, which is recognized as a world record for both junior and senior categories.
Significance of the Win
This victory marks India's first individual medal at the ISSF World Cup this season across all shooting events. The 21-year-old shooter has also secured a spot in the ISSF World Cup final scheduled for December in Italy.
Munich World Cup: Final Results
In the final standings, Germany's former world champion Doreen Vennekamp claimed the silver medal with a score of 38 out of 50, while Bulgaria's Miroslava Mincheva took home the bronze with 31 out of 45. Olympic champion Yang Ji-in, who led the qualification round with a score of 592-28x, finished in fifth place.
Qualification Round Insights
Esha ranked fifth in the qualification round with a score of 587-19x, achieving 293 in precision shooting and 294 in rapid fire. In contrast, double Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker finished 12th with a score of 582-19x, missing the final cut. Rahi Sarnobat, a gold medalist from the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the same discipline, ended up in 14th place with a score of 581-23x. Additionally, India's Arshdeep Kaur and Tejaswani participated under ranking points only (RPO) status, finishing 44th and 51st, respectively.
India's Medal Achievements This Season
Esha's triumph adds to India's medal tally, marking the third medal earned in rifle, pistol, and shotgun events this season. Earlier, at the rifle/pistol World Cup in Spain, Mukesh Nelavalli and Palak Gulia won gold in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, while Vivaan Kapoor and Neeru Dhanda secured bronze in the mixed team trap event in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
