Escalating Tensions: Saudi Arabia and Pakistan Discuss Defense Amid Iranian Threats
Rising Tensions in the Gulf Region
The ongoing triangular conflict involving Iran, Israel, and the United States has now extended its reach to the Gulf nations. Recent drone and missile strikes by Iran targeting Saudi Arabia's energy facilities and strategic locations have raised alarms within the Saudi leadership. In light of this escalating situation, Saudi Arabia's Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman convened an urgent high-level meeting with Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir.
During the meeting, both parties deliberated on the recent Iranian assaults and explored potential responses under their Joint Strategic Defense Agreement. According to statements shared by the Saudi Defense Minister on the social media platform X, the leaders concurred that such attacks pose a significant threat to regional peace and stability.
Details of the Meeting
Salman posted on X, stating, "I met with Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defense Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir. We discussed necessary measures to counter Iranian attacks on the Kingdom within the framework of our Joint Strategic Defense Agreement. We emphasized that such actions undermine regional security and stability, expressing hope that the Iranian side will act wisely and avoid miscalculations."
Significance of the Saudi-Pakistan Defense Pact
This meeting is particularly significant as a defense agreement was signed between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan in September 2025. Under this strategic mutual defense pact, both nations pledged to consider an attack on one as an attack on both. This agreement, signed by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, has further strengthened the already close military ties between the two countries. As a result of this pact, Pakistan could be involved in defending the Kingdom against any attacks on Saudi territory.
Why Monitor Pakistan's Role Closely?
Historically, Pakistan has maintained military cooperation with Saudi Arabia, including the presence of Pakistani troops in the Kingdom for training and defense support. With the new defense agreement in place, experts believe that Pakistan's security role in Saudi Arabia could become even more crucial. Following reports of Iranian drone and missile strikes within Saudi Arabia, speculation has increased regarding Pakistan's potential involvement. Even a minor attack on the Kingdom could theoretically activate the defense agreement between the two nations.
Despite these defense commitments, Pakistan faces numerous internal challenges that complicate direct involvement in Middle Eastern conflicts. The country is currently grappling with economic difficulties, security concerns at home, and fragile diplomatic relations with neighboring countries.
Engagement in a large-scale conflict could further strain Pakistan's military resources and finances, making the situation particularly challenging for Islamabad.
Pakistan's Concerns
Pakistan has already expressed its concerns regarding this situation. Reports indicate that Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar conveyed a warning to his Iranian counterpart against attacks on Saudi Arabia. He stated that such actions could compel Pakistan to reconsider its stance on its defense responsibilities.
