Escalating Tensions: Israel's Airstrikes on Iran Prompt Urgent Evacuations

Intensifying Conflict in the Middle East
Dubai: Following a surprise offensive targeting Iran's military and nuclear facilities, Israel has intensified its air operations against Tehran. This escalation comes just five days after the initial strikes, prompting a warning from US President Donald Trump for residents to evacuate the city.
Trump's message on social media stated, "IRAN CAN NOT HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON," urging immediate evacuation of Tehran. He later clarified that his early departure from a G7 summit in Canada was unrelated to ceasefire discussions, emphasizing that the situation was more significant.
The Israeli military has advised approximately 330,000 residents from a central neighborhood to leave. Tehran, with a population nearing 10 million, is one of the largest cities in the Middle East, and many have begun to flee amid the ongoing conflict.
Israel claims its extensive military campaign is essential to thwart Iran's progress towards developing nuclear weapons, resulting in at least 224 fatalities since the conflict reignited.
In retaliation, Iran has launched over 370 missiles and numerous drones towards Israel, leading to 24 deaths and more than 500 injuries within Israeli territory. Reports indicate that missile attacks continued on Tuesday, with explosions reported in northern Israel.
Tehran's Streets Empty Amid Crisis
As the situation escalates, Tehran's downtown area has started to clear, with many shops shuttered, including the historic Grand Bazaar, which typically closes only during significant unrest or health crises.
Traffic congestion has been reported on routes leading west from Tehran, with many residents heading towards the Caspian Sea region. Gas stations are experiencing long lines as people prepare for potential further conflict.
Despite the chaos, Iranian officials maintain that the situation is under control, offering no public guidance on safety measures.
The Israeli military has claimed responsibility for the death of a high-ranking Iranian general in a recent strike, although Iran has yet to confirm this information.
Trump's Focus on the Conflict
Before departing the G7 summit, Trump joined other leaders in a statement asserting that Iran must never possess nuclear weapons and called for a reduction in hostilities in the region, including a ceasefire in Gaza.
French President Emmanuel Macron indicated that discussions were ongoing regarding a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, but Trump's social media post seemed to dismiss this notion.
Trump clarified that his return to Washington was not related to ceasefire efforts, stating, "Much bigger than that." Meanwhile, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth convened with the president and national security team to address the situation.
Israeli Military Claims Dominance
Israeli military spokesperson Brig Gen Effie Defrin announced that Israel has achieved complete aerial dominance over Tehran. The military reported the destruction of over 120 missile launchers and two F-14 fighter jets used by Iran against Israeli forces.
Additionally, Israeli strikes targeted ten command centers linked to Iran's Quds Force, which operates outside of Iran. Evacuation warnings have been issued for areas in central Tehran housing critical infrastructure, including state television and hospitals.
Health officials in Iran report 1,277 injuries, while human rights organizations suggest that the actual death toll is significantly higher, with over 400 fatalities, including civilians.
Impact on Iran's Nuclear Ambitions
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that the military actions have significantly delayed Iran's nuclear program. He maintains regular communication with Trump regarding the situation.
Iran insists its nuclear endeavors are peaceful, and international assessments indicate that Tehran has not actively pursued nuclear weapons since 2003. However, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency has warned that Iran possesses enough enriched uranium for multiple nuclear bombs if it chooses to pursue that path.
Israel has targeted several Iranian nuclear sites but has yet to neutralize the heavily fortified Fordo enrichment facility, which may require advanced US munitions to destroy.
Calls for Diplomacy Amidst Ongoing Conflict
Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, has made a subtle appeal for US intervention to facilitate negotiations to end the conflict. He suggested that a single call from Washington could influence Israeli actions.
Araghchi's comments come after recent talks between the US and Iran were canceled following Israel's surprise attacks. He stated that Iran would cease its strikes if Israel reciprocated.
