Intensifying Conflict in Southern Lebanon

On Friday, Israel executed multiple airstrikes in southern Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of at least four individuals. In response, the militant group Hezbollah reported launching rockets and drones, one of which crashed in northern Israel, injuring two soldiers.

Despite a ceasefire established on April 17, both Israel's military and Hezbollah have continued their assaults. The state-run National News Agency indicated that the fatalities occurred in three villages located in the southern region.

The Israeli military issued an evacuation warning to residents of Habboush, situated near Nabatiyeh, advising that proximity to Hezbollah facilities could endanger their lives.

These hostilities followed the recovery of five bodies, including a father and his three sons, from the rubble in Kfar Rumman, near Nabatiyeh, a day after they were killed. The National News Agency reported that these individuals were victims of an airstrike on Thursday, which also claimed the life of a Lebanese soldier, confirmed by the army.

By Friday afternoon, Hezbollah had released six statements detailing their drone and rocket attacks on Israeli military targets.

The Israeli military acknowledged the downing of an explosive drone launched by Hezbollah, which fell in northern Israel close to the Lebanese border.

Reports from Israeli media indicated a drone strike near Margaliot, which ignited a localized fire, and noted that two soldiers sustained minor injuries from a separate drone impact.

Amidst the ongoing conflict, some residents have begun returning to their homes in southern Lebanon after being displaced for several weeks. One such resident, Umm Ali Khodor, shared her experience of returning to her damaged apartment in Tyre, stating, "We were displaced, we rented a house, but as you know the situation is very difficult. We could not continue so we returned to our home."

The current conflict between Israel and Hezbollah ignited on March 2, following Hezbollah's rocket fire into northern Israel, just two days after the U.S. and Israel initiated military actions against Iran, Hezbollah's primary supporter. Since then, Israel has conducted hundreds of airstrikes and launched a ground invasion into southern Lebanon, capturing numerous towns and villages along the border.

This escalation has led to the first direct talks between Lebanon and Israel in over thirty years, despite the two nations being in a formal state of war since Israel's establishment in 1948.

A ceasefire, initially declared in Washington, took effect on April 17 and was later extended for an additional three weeks.

As of Friday, the Health Ministry reported that the conflict's death toll has reached 2,618, with 8,094 individuals injured.
