Escalating Tensions in Ukhrul District Amid Armed Group Movements
Rising Tensions in Ukhrul District
Imphal, March 20: Tensions have intensified along the outskirts of Ukhrul as new reports suggest the mobilization of armed factions near Sinakeithei village, following a gunfight that occurred the previous day.
Residents are on high alert due to sporadic gunfire and the sighting of armed groups along major routes, raising concerns about a potential escalation of violence.
Local sources indicate that armed personnel were gathering along the Leplen–Tingpibung route via Sinakeithei, alarming nearby communities. Unverified drone footage has emerged, allegedly depicting groups positioning themselves along paths leading to the Ihang River.
However, these images could not be independently verified at the time of this report.
The recent developments follow a fresh exchange of gunfire reported on Thursday afternoon at Sinakeithei village, situated on the outskirts of Ukhrul district.
According to the Secretary of the Sinakeithei Village Authority, suspected Kuki militants reportedly opened fire using automatic weapons from various directions along the Lungter hill range around 3:20 PM.
This attack prompted retaliatory fire from volunteers of the Tangkhul Naga village, leading to a fierce exchange that lasted over an hour. Sources confirmed that intermittent firing continued into Friday morning, maintaining the area's tense atmosphere.
While no official casualties have been reported, the incident has caused widespread panic among residents, especially those in vulnerable areas. Many villagers have opted to stay indoors as a precaution against potential violence.
Conflicting accounts have emerged regarding the events, with both sides accusing each other of instigating the conflict. The absence of an official statement from security forces has contributed to the uncertainty, fostering speculation and anxiety among the populace.
This situation underscores the ongoing instability in inter-community boundary regions of Manipur's hill districts, where sporadic violence and distrust continue despite repeated assurances of peace from authorities.
Security forces are anticipated to evaluate the situation and implement necessary measures to avert further escalation. Meanwhile, residents remain vigilant, hoping for prompt action to restore peace in the affected area.
