Iraq Becomes a New Battlefield

As conflicts intensify in the Middle East, Iraq is emerging as a significant battleground. Recent reports indicate that armed groups backed by Iran have launched severe attacks targeting American diplomats and military installations throughout Iraq. These assaults have exacerbated the already rising tensions between Washington and Tehran, contributing to the ongoing proxy warfare in the region.

U.S. Condemnation and Urgent Action Requested

In response to these attacks, the U.S. State Department condemned the actions, labeling them as 'despicable terrorist attacks' on American diplomatic missions. They urged Iraqi authorities to take immediate measures to prevent further assaults.

Call for Iraqi Government Action

According to a spokesperson, the U.S. has consistently urged the Iraqi government to fulfill its responsibility to stop attacks on American facilities and prevent terrorist militias from using Iraqi territory for launching assaults.

U.S. Prepared to Protect Its Personnel

The spokesperson further stated that if the Iraqi government fails to meet its obligations, the United States will not hesitate to protect its personnel and facilities.

Targeted Locations and Recent Developments

While specific locations of the recent attacks have not been disclosed, previous reports have indicated that major U.S. sites, including the embassy in Baghdad and the consulate in Erbil, have been repeatedly targeted since the onset of the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran. Last week, the State Department announced a reward of up to $3 million for information related to attacks on its diplomatic facilities in Iraq.

Drone and Missile Strikes by Islamic Resistance

Earlier, reports from Al Jazeera noted that a group known as 'Islamic Resistance,' identified as an umbrella organization for Iranian-backed militias, conducted 19 drone and missile strikes against U.S. sites in Iraq and the surrounding region on April 3.

Attacks on PMF Headquarters

Amid these developments, an Iraqi police officer cited by Al Jazeera reported that the headquarters of the Iran-backed Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) in western Iraq's Al-Qaim was also attacked. Additionally, another airstrike reportedly targeted the 34th Brigade of the PMF in Mosul.

Role of Armed Groups in Regional Conflicts

Shia armed groups, including Islamic Resistance and PMF, have played significant roles in various proxy conflicts across the region.
