Escalating Conflict: Israel Strikes Lebanon Amid Tensions with Hezbollah
Intensified Military Actions in Lebanon
Beirut: In a significant escalation, the Israeli military launched airstrikes on Lebanon's fourth largest city early Thursday, resulting in the deaths of at least eight individuals amid ongoing tensions with the Hezbollah group, just before critical discussions in Washington.
Numerous others sustained injuries from the attacks, as reported by Lebanon's National News Agency.
In a related incident, an Israeli soldier was killed in northern Israel due to a drone strike attributed to Hezbollah, according to military sources.
This surge in military activity follows Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's announcement of an increase in military operations against Hezbollah, triggered by the group's deployment of fibre-optic drones that have targeted Israeli forces in Lebanon and reached some northern Israeli towns.
Lebanese and Israeli military representatives are scheduled to engage in their first security discussions in Washington on Friday. These talks have extended a nominal ceasefire that began on April 17, although hostilities have escalated, particularly outside Beirut.
Hezbollah has rejected the negotiations, instead aligning with its ally Iran, which has stipulated the cessation of hostilities in Lebanon as a prerequisite for its own discussions with Washington, facilitated by Pakistan.
Before the Thursday strikes, Israeli military spokesperson Avichay Adraee had warned residents of eight buildings in Tyre and nearby areas along the Mediterranean coast. Many have since evacuated the region.
In Sidon, an Israeli drone targeted an apartment building housing displaced families.
Mohammad Al-Gharbi, a resident nearby, recounted the chaos following the explosion, stating, 'I was in my room when part of the wall and shattered glass fell on me. This building housed six apartments occupied by families who had fled from the south to escape violence, only to be struck here.'
In the coastal town of Adloun, an Israeli drone attack on a vehicle carrying a fleeing family resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including children. Another drone strike, which occurred without warning, killed two people on a motorcycle near Tyre, with the target remaining unclear.
The Israeli military confirmed that a soldier was killed in northern Israel due to a Hezbollah drone attack, with two reservists also injured.
Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for numerous drone and rocket strikes aimed at Israeli forces in southern Lebanon and northern Israel.
The ongoing conflict has displaced over one million people in Lebanon, following Hezbollah's rocket fire into northern Israel on March 2, which was in solidarity with Iran shortly after the Iran war commenced.
The Lebanese Health Ministry reports that at least 3,269 individuals have died due to Israeli strikes since the conflict began, with more than 9,800 injured.
Netanyahu's office has stated that at least 23 Israeli soldiers and a defense contractor have lost their lives in or near southern Lebanon, alongside two civilian casualties in northern Israel, primarily due to drone attacks.
