Escalating Conflict: Afghanistan Launches Attacks on Pakistani Military Bases

Intensifying Hostilities Between Afghanistan and Pakistan

Kabul/Islamabad, February 28, 2026 — The tension between Afghanistan and Pakistan has escalated into open warfare. The Taliban government has initiated a series of drone and rocket strikes targeting several Pakistani military installations, resulting in multiple powerful explosions. The Afghan military claims to have focused on army camps, drone systems, and other military facilities located in northwestern Pakistan, particularly in Abbottabad, Swabi, Nowshera, and areas near Islamabad.

Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid stated, “Pakistan previously bombed our cities, including Kabul, Kandahar, and Paktia, resulting in civilian casualties. We have responded decisively. Our successful drone strikes on Pakistani military bases have destroyed several sites and killed dozens of soldiers.” Afghan media has released videos showing fires and explosions at Pakistani locations.

Details of Major Attacks:

  • Abbottabad and Swabi: Claims of complete destruction of Pakistani entry drone systems.

  • Nowshera: Rocket attacks on army cantonments, with reports of multiple explosions.

  • Near Islamabad: Drone strikes on military camps just a few kilometers from the PM House, causing panic in Pakistan.

  • The Taliban claims to have destroyed a total of 19 Pakistani posts and 2 bases, killing over 55 soldiers.

These attacks are a response to severe airstrikes conducted by Pakistan on Thursday and Friday nights in Afghanistan. Under 'Operation Gajab Lil-Haq', Pakistan bombed over 22 sites in Kabul, Kandahar, and other provinces, claiming to have killed 274 Taliban fighters. Pakistan's Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has declared this an 'open war'.

There are discrepancies in the claims from both sides, and independent verification has not been possible. However, gunfire, drone strikes, and bombings continue along the border. The international community is concerned that this conflict may escalate further. The Taliban has offered to negotiate but warned of a 'strong response' to any new attacks from Pakistan.

The situation is being closely monitored, and updates will follow.
