Enhanced Security Measures in Uttam Nagar Ahead of Eid Celebrations
Increased Security in Uttam Nagar Following Tensions
In response to directives from the High Court aimed at ensuring adequate arrangements in sensitive areas, security has been intensified in Uttam Nagar and other parts of Delhi ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. Tensions have escalated in Uttam Nagar following the death of a 26-year-old man during clashes between two communities on March 4, coinciding with Holi celebrations. Consequently, the Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the Delhi Police, seeking a response regarding the situation.
Given the prevailing tensions, the Delhi Police have ramped up security in Uttam Nagar and the surrounding Dwarka district.
Security Measures and Police Deployment
Security around the Uttam Nagar East Metro Station has been significantly tightened. A senior police official indicated that a comprehensive deployment plan has been established, with personnel ready to respond swiftly to any situation. Joint Commissioner of Police (Western Range) Jatin Narwal stated that police forces are being stationed around Hashtsal Village and its vicinity to prevent communal tensions and maintain law and order. He emphasized that a sufficient number of Delhi Police and armed paramilitary personnel will be deployed to uphold public safety, particularly around mosques, Eidgahs, and other religious sites frequented by Muslims during Eid.
Background of the Tensions
The unrest began on Holi, March 4, when a dispute erupted between two neighboring families in JJ Colony, resulting in the death of Tarun (26) after he was injured during the altercation. According to police reports, the conflict ignited when a water balloon thrown by a girl from one family accidentally hit a woman from the other family. Following this incident, protests ensued, leading to the burning of two vehicles belonging to the accused. So far, police have detained two minors and arrested 12 individuals in connection with the case. Enhanced security measures have been implemented around mosques, Eidgahs, and other public areas where large gatherings are expected, including regular patrols and vehicle checks.
Monitoring and Community Engagement
Authorities have also intensified monitoring of social media to curb the spread of inflammatory content, identifying and acting against several objectionable posts. Areas with mixed populations have been classified as sensitive. As part of an awareness campaign, flag marches have been conducted in various neighborhoods, and these will continue to reassure residents during Eid. Pradeep Shukla, president of the Uttam Nagar Resident Welfare Association (RWA), noted that while the presence of security personnel has helped maintain some control, tensions remain. He remarked, "Numerous barricades have been set up, and movement has decreased. People are still concerned, but we hope for a peaceful situation."
