Enhanced Security Measures in Delhi for New Year Celebrations
Delhi Police Strengthens Security Ahead of New Year Festivities
In preparation for New Year celebrations, the Delhi Police has intensified security measures around Connaught Place and India Gate in central Delhi. Authorities have conducted mock drills to ensure rapid response in emergencies and have established strict timelines for December 31. As the city gears up to welcome 2026, restaurants, hotels, and markets are adorned for the festivities. Following a recent explosion at the Red Fort, security agencies have heightened vigilance due to potential terrorist threats.
Mock Drill Conducted to Assess Security Readiness
Given the anticipated large crowds during the New Year celebrations, ensuring safety in Connaught Place, a major commercial hub, poses a significant challenge for law enforcement. To evaluate preparedness, a security mock drill was carried out on Friday, December 26, at the inner circle of Connaught Place and Rajiv Chowk Metro Station. The drill simulated a scenario where a suspicious bag was reported near the Rajiv Chowk Metro Station. Upon receiving the alert, multiple teams from the Delhi Police, along with a dog squad and bomb disposal unit, swiftly arrived at the scene.
Effective Response Demonstrated During the Drill
The area surrounding the bag was quickly cordoned off, restricting public movement. After thorough investigation, security teams confirmed that the bag contained no suspicious or dangerous items. The operation showcased the prompt response and coordination among police and security agencies. DCP New Delhi, Devesh Mehla, stated that such exercises aim to test the readiness and response time of police and allied agencies in emergencies. He emphasized that the scenario was deliberately created to assess how quickly and effectively agencies respond to potential threats.
Standard Operating Procedures in Place for New Year
Mehla further noted that there are established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the New Year, with officers deployed accordingly. The mock drill was conducted to evaluate their vigilance and preparedness. He mentioned that the response time was satisfactory, as it was an impromptu drill involving the dog squad, bomb disposal unit, and staff. Proper barricading and announcement protocols were followed. The DCP highlighted that heavy crowds are expected at Connaught Place and India Gate on December 31 and January 1, and adequate security measures have been implemented to ensure safety.
