Amarnath Yatra 2023: Key Details and Security Arrangements
This year, the Amarnath Yatra is set to commence on July 3. This ancient pilgrimage dedicated to Lord Shiva is traditionally held during the month of Sawan. For this year's journey, security protocols will be exceptionally stringent. A deployment of 900 companies of paramilitary forces has been arranged for the Amarnath Yatra.
A senior official from the Home Department informed the media that unprecedented security measures will be in place for this year's pilgrimage. In addition to the 900 companies of paramilitary forces, extra military personnel will also be deployed. This decision to enhance security was made following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam on April 22, which resulted in the tragic loss of 26 lives, including 25 tourists and one local resident. This incident escalated tensions between India and Pakistan.
Located in the southern Kashmir Himalayas, the sacred Amarnath cave temple will host a 38-day pilgrimage starting July 3. Officials have stated that discussions are ongoing to establish a comprehensive security framework. According to reports, various paramilitary forces, including CRPF, SSB, ITBP, and BSF, are expected to deploy around 900 companies for the event.
Furthermore, the military has already identified sensitive locations. Two base camps have been established, particularly in Pahalgam and Baltal, which serve as starting points for the Amarnath pilgrimage. These areas will be secured, and commandos will be stationed to ensure the safety of the cave temple.
According to media reports, a specialized strategy is being developed to enhance security. A multi-layered security grid will be implemented for the pilgrimage. It is noteworthy that the Amarnath cave temple is situated at an altitude of approximately 13,000 feet above sea level, located about 45 km from Pahalgam and 14 km from Baltal.
