In a remarkable opening match of the ICC Women's T20 World Cup, England secured a commanding 87-run victory over Sri Lanka in Birmingham on Saturday. Danni Wyatt-Hodge's sensational century, along with swift contributions from Amy Jones and captain Nat Sciver-Brunt, set the tone for the hosts.
Record-Breaking Innings
Batting first after being put in by Sri Lanka, England amassed an astonishing total of 219 runs for just one wicket in their allotted 20 overs, marking their highest score in women's T20 internationals. Danni Wyatt-Hodge remained unbeaten at 105 runs off 62 balls, hitting 15 fours and a six. This century marked her third in women's T20Is. She formed a formidable opening partnership of 135 runs with wicketkeeper Amy Jones, who scored 53 runs off 38 balls, including four boundaries and a six. Additionally, Sciver-Brunt contributed a brisk 46 runs off 22 balls, becoming the second English woman to surpass 3,000 T20I runs, now totaling 3,006 runs in 138 matches with an average of 29.47 and a strike rate nearing 120.
Sri Lanka's Struggles
Malki Madara was the sole bowler from Sri Lanka to claim a wicket, finishing with figures of 1 for 51.
Kemp's Debut Performance
In response, Sri Lanka was bowled out for 132 runs in their 20 overs. Harshitha Samarawickrama and Nilakshika Silva were the only players to score above 20, with 29 and 39 runs, respectively. Freya Kemp shone with the ball, taking 4 wickets for just 22 runs, while Sophie Ecclestone and Charlie Dean supported well with 2 wickets each. Kemp's four-wicket haul made her the third woman to achieve this feat on her T20 World Cup debut, joining her teammate Danni and former Indian bowler Diana David.
