Engineer Assaulted at Gunpoint in Bhubaneswar: Police Investigation Underway

Bhubaneswar, Oct 1: A disturbing incident occurred on Wednesday night when a masked assailant reportedly sexually assaulted a 26-year-old woman engineer at gunpoint in an apartment located in the Nayapalli police jurisdiction, as confirmed by the Commissionerate Police on Thursday.
Following the victim's complaint, authorities initiated an investigation into the matter.
According to police reports, the victim, originally from Jagatsinghpur district, is employed as an engineer in a private firm in Bhubaneswar. She resides with her elder sister in the apartment.
Upon learning of the incident, senior police officials, including Deputy Commissioner of Police Saravana Vivek M, promptly arrived at the scene to commence the investigation.
"The victim reported that while she was in her rented apartment, an unidentified individual entered and assaulted her. She lives with her elder sister, and the apartment owners reside on the first floor. The assailant allegedly brandished a firearm or a toy gun," stated the police.
A senior police representative mentioned that the victim's statement has been documented, and a medical examination is currently underway. Investigators are also reviewing CCTV footage from the vicinity of Nayapalli.
Local residents expressed their outrage over the incident, urging law enforcement and local authorities to apprehend the perpetrator swiftly and impose severe penalties. They called for increased police presence in the area to deter future crimes.
In a recent assembly session, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi revealed that the state recorded 1,606 rape cases from January 1 to July 31, 2026.
Data presented in the assembly indicated that a total of 21,069 cases related to various crimes against women were reported across Odisha during the same timeframe.
