Empowering Athletes: The Impact of Gujarat's District Level Sports School Scheme
The Importance of Sports in Development
Values such as discipline, teamwork, and sportsmanship are often cultivated on the playground rather than through textbooks. Recognizing the significance of sports for holistic development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi initiated the District Level Sports School (DLSS) scheme during his time as Chief Minister of Gujarat.
Overview of the DLSS Initiative
As per a statement from the Gujarat Chief Minister's Office, the DLSS scheme aims to nurture talented athletes by offering free education alongside professional sports training. Currently, there are 39 operational District Level Sports Schools in Gujarat, benefiting over 12,000 athletes. Launched in 2013-14 by the Sports Authority of Gujarat, this initiative focuses on both sports training and academic education. Players are selected based on two categories: (1) Young Talent and (2) Proven Talent, which includes those who have already achieved success in their sports. Participants receive free education, books, stationery, accommodation, meals, uniforms, sports kits, intensive training, and stipends.
Scientific Training and Notable Achievements
The DLSS scheme employs a scientific training methodology that emphasizes fitness, technique, dietary advice, and injury prevention. This approach has significantly contributed to preparing athletes from Gujarat for both national and international competitions. In the past two years, athletes from DLSS have secured 3,444 medals in state-level events and 335 at the national level, with four athletes also competing internationally and winning a bronze medal.
