Emotional Farewell: Manu Bhaker Honors Coach Jaspal Rana's Legacy

A Heartfelt Tribute

Double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker expressed her deep sorrow over the passing of her coach, Jaspal Rana, whom she regarded as a mentor, guide, and friend. Rana, a celebrated figure in Indian shooting, died at the age of 49 after undergoing a stent procedure due to chest discomfort. Despite medical efforts, he could not be saved.

From Dehradun, where Rana's remains were taken, Bhaker shared her struggle to come to terms with the loss of someone who had been pivotal during critical moments of her shooting career. "I still can't believe it," she told a sports website. "This news is hard to accept. He was more than just a coach; he was a friend who understood me deeply."

Jaspal Rana: A Legacy of Excellence

Rana was one of India's most successful shooters, amassing numerous medals at both the Commonwealth and Asian Games, including an impressive 13 golds. He was a former world junior champion, an Olympian, and a Padma Shri awardee, later becoming a highly respected coach.

A Relationship Beyond Coaching

Rana significantly influenced Manu Bhaker's development as a shooter, guiding her through both victories and challenges, creating a remarkable comeback story in Indian sports. Their bond transcended the shooting range, characterized by trust and mentorship.

"He had moments of strictness, but he also knew when to listen," Manu reflected. "He always aimed for my best, even when I didn't see it at the time. Looking back, every lesson had its purpose."

"When we resumed our work together, it felt like returning home," she added. "He could sense my confidence levels, my nerves, and when I needed encouragement. He had a unique way of bringing out my best."

Honoring His Influence

With Rana's support, Manu regained her confidence and went on to make history as the first Indian to win two medals at a single Olympic Games in Paris 2024.

"Every medal and every success will always remind me of him," she stated. "A part of those achievements belongs to him because he never lost faith in me, even during my toughest times."
