Mandi: For almost five years, Mamta, also known as Manju, grappled with the haunting question of her family's whereabouts and whether she would ever reunite with them.
This emotional journey reached a significant milestone when she was finally connected with her family in Kapurthala, Punjab, via a video call, marking the end of her long-standing uncertainty.
The successful reunion was largely attributed to the dedicated initiative of SDM Balh Smritika Negi, who undertook the challenging task of tracing Mamta's family by piecing together the limited information available.
Mamta, approximately 32 years old, was discovered in the Una district of Himachal Pradesh on May 30, 2021. Due to communication barriers and memory issues, identifying her family proved to be a daunting challenge.
She was subsequently placed in the care of Swadhar Greh (Women) in Chalakkha, Lunapani, Mandi, where she received essential support and counseling.
Gradually, Mamta began to share details about her life, identifying her father as Gernail Singh and her mother as Paramjeet Kaur. She also mentioned having three brothers and a sister, speaking Punjabi and providing an address in Nawa Pind, Kushth Ashram, Kapurthala, Punjab.
However, these snippets of information were insufficient to immediately reconnect her with her family.
At this critical juncture, SDM Smritika Negi took charge, determined to verify the information and establish connections in Punjab, ensuring the case did not remain just another institutional record.
The search began to yield positive results.
Dr. Ruma Devi and Dr. Parminder Singh played pivotal roles in Punjab, successfully tracing Mamta's family and establishing contact, while CDPO Jitender Saini and Sabita Chanda from India Cares provided additional support throughout the process.
The defining moment for Mamta arrived when she was able to see and converse with her family during the video call. After years apart, hearing the voices of her loved ones transformed into an overwhelmingly emotional experience for everyone involved.
