A New Devotional Release for Janmashtami

Munish Sood

Mandi: A fresh devotional song titled ‘Kanha Re’ was unveiled in celebration of Janmashtami, featuring the rising talent Manjula Kanwar, under the guidance of music director Deepak Mattu.

The song was launched at St. Friends Convent School in Bagla, with Principal Ekta officiating the event. Mattu shared that the track was crafted in just five days for the occasion, with the recording completed in a single day.

Mattu composed the music and revised the lyrics, originally penned by his late maternal aunt, Savitri Devi. He enhanced the original piece by adding new verses and modernizing its sound while preserving its devotional essence.

This project holds personal significance for Mattu, as it revives a family legacy. By reinterpreting the composition for modern listeners, he aims to breathe new life into the original work.

Additionally, the song serves as a platform for emerging artists. Mattu discovered Manjula during her performance at a school event, where her unique voice and folk style impressed him, leading to her selection for this devotional piece.

For Manjula, this song is a chance to expand her reach beyond the school stage and connect with a broader audience. Her folk-inspired vocal style adds a distinctive flavor to the devotional track.

The tight production timeline posed a challenge, with only five days available to finalize the composition and recording before Janmashtami. Remarkably, the studio work was wrapped up in just one day.

The initial digital reception of the song has been promising, with reports indicating that ‘Kanha Re’ garnered over 2,000 plays on its first night. A music video has also been released.

Mattu expressed his broader goal of discovering and nurturing talent that may not have the chance to shine otherwise. By providing these artists with a platform, he hopes to boost their confidence and open doors to greater opportunities.

With its Janmashtami launch, a family-inspired composition, a modern musical approach, and a fresh folk voice, ‘Kanha Re’ embodies a fusion of devotion, tradition, and new talent in a single musical endeavor.
