Emerging Hockey Star PB Sunil Aims to Shine for Karnataka

Karnataka's New Hockey Hope

Karnataka has a storied history in hockey, producing legends like MP Ganesh, MM Somaya, AB Subbiah, Ashish Ballal, Arjun Halappa, and more recently, Raghunath VR, SK Uthappa, Nikkin Thimmaiah, and SV Sunil, who all represented India at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Now, a fresh talent, PB Sunil, is stepping up to carry the torch for the state in this sport.

A Journey from Humble Origins

Hailing from Anavatti village in Sorab Taluk, Shivamogga district, Sunil began his hockey journey at the age of 10 through the DYES Sports hostel in his area. Coming from a family of daily wage laborers in agriculture, his success in hockey brings hope for a better future for his family.

Aiming for Success in the Hockey India League

Recently signed by the Vedanta Kalinga Lancers for ₹2 lakh, Sunil understands the significance of performing well in the Hockey India League. He expressed, "The Junior World Cup was a dream come true, but now I must focus on my performance with the Kalinga Lancers, who have a talented roster from whom I can learn a lot this season."

Reflecting on Karnataka's rich hockey heritage, he stated, "Initially, I was unaware of the state's contributions to hockey, but being part of the national setup has made me realize the responsibility I carry, motivating me to follow in the footsteps of our state's legends."

Learning from Elite Defenders

Sunil is eager to learn from Olympic Gold medalists Arthur Van Doren and Alexander Hendrickx, both of whom are renowned defenders from Belgium. He noted, "As a defender, learning from the best in the world is invaluable. Arthur and Alex possess exceptional defensive skills, game awareness, and tactical acumen, especially in penalty corner situations."

"During the Hockey India League, I aim to observe not just their on-field techniques but also their match preparation, off-field conduct, and relaxation methods. This is a unique opportunity to learn from international hockey stars, and HIL is the perfect platform for that," he added.

Aiming to Improve Family's Future

Sunil's drive in hockey is fueled by the desire to uplift his family's financial situation. He shared, "We own a small half-acre plot in our village, and making ends meet is challenging. However, I believe that excelling in hockey will secure me a job, and with Hockey India's cash rewards for significant victories and earnings from the Hockey India League, I am confident that my family's circumstances will improve."

The Vedanta Kalinga Lancers are set to face the Ranchi Royals in their opening match on January 4 at 19:30 hours.
