A Close Call for Air India Express Passengers


Kochi: An aviation disaster was narrowly avoided on Thursday when an Air India Express flight, carrying approximately 160 passengers, executed an emergency landing at Kochi, Kerala, due to a mid-air technical issue.


The flight, designated AIE 398, was traveling from Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, to Kozhikode.


While in flight, the pilot identified a problem with the aircraft's landing gear. Promptly, the pilot requested an emergency diversion to Cochin International Airport.


Upon receiving the distress signal, airport officials activated comprehensive emergency protocols.


The aircraft successfully landed at around 9:07 a.m., with fire and rescue teams, medical personnel, and security staff strategically positioned along the runway as a precaution.


Post-landing inspections revealed that two tyres had burst, underscoring the critical nature of the malfunction and validating the crew's decision to divert to Kochi.


Officials from Cochin International Airports Limited (CIAL) managed the emergency response and subsequent procedures, ensuring passengers were safely escorted to the terminal.


Airport sources confirmed that all emergency systems were fully operational and functioned as intended.


Passengers have been accommodated in the airport lounge while arrangements for their onward travel are being finalized.


Air India Express representatives stated that they are working to either arrange an alternative flight to Kozhikode as soon as possible or provide suitable ground transportation.


In case of delays or cancellations, the airline has committed to transporting passengers by road to Kozhikode, which is about a seven-hour journey from Kochi. Airline staff are also providing refreshments and assistance as passengers await further information.


This incident once again emphasizes the critical role of quick decision-making by flight crews and the preparedness of airport emergency systems, which collectively helped prevent a potentially serious accident.
