Police Officers Face Suspension Over Robbery Allegations
In Kanpur, eleven police personnel, including five head constables, were suspended on Tuesday following accusations of robbing a truck loaded with livestock.
According to Yogesh Kumar, the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), the incident occurred last Saturday when the accused officers allegedly pursued a truck and coerced the driver, Lakshman, and his assistant, Mohammad Ujair, into paying each officer 500 rupees.
Reports indicate that the accused officers, including Rishi Rajan, Hariom, and Atul Sachan, physically assaulted Lakshman, also known as Lucky, and Ujair, striking them with sticks and stealing 10,000 rupees in cash.
The suspended officers have been identified as Rishi Rajan, Amir Hasan, Pradeep Kumar, Ajay Kumar Yadav, and Anand Kumar (all head constables), along with constables Hariom, Atul Sachan, Sonu Yadav, Uma Shankar Dixit, and female constables Rinki Rani and Aradhana.
An official statement revealed that the truck carrying livestock was en route from Sarasoul to Aligarh via the Ramadevi-Bhunti highway when it was intercepted by the police on the Barra highway.
The statement further explained that additional police vehicles from Hanumant Vihar station arrived at the scene, where officers demanded money under the threat of police action. When the driver and his assistant refused to pay the bribe, the officers forcibly removed Ujair and Lakshman from the vehicle and assaulted them.
Additionally, a case of animal cruelty has been filed against the victims. Authorities noted that Ujair and Lakshman recorded a video of the incident and shared it on social media, prompting senior officials to initiate an investigation into the misconduct of the police officers.
