Election Scrutiny in Nilgiris District

As part of the ongoing enforcement of the model code of conduct during the election campaign, officials from the election air squad conducted a search of a helicopter carrying BJP leader K. Annamalai upon its arrival in Udhagamandalam on April 10. Annamalai, a member of the BJP's executive committee and former president of the Tamil Nadu BJP, traveled by helicopter from Coimbatore to support BJP candidate Bhojarajan, who is contesting from the Udhagamandalam assembly constituency.

Increased Security Measures Ahead of Elections

The inspection of the aircraft occurred immediately after landing, reflecting heightened security protocols in the election areas to ensure compliance with electoral regulations and prevent any violations. This incident comes amid a surge in political activities leading up to the Tamil Nadu assembly elections scheduled for April 23, with vote counting set for May 4. Political accusations have intensified among major parties during this period.

Political Rivalries Intensify

Earlier that day, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami criticized DMK leader Kanimozhi Karunanidhi, referencing old allegations related to the 2G spectrum case. He warned that if she continued to trust Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, she might face legal troubles again. In response, Kanimozhi, actively campaigning for DMK candidates, accused rival leaders of being disconnected from the public. She emphasized the importance of the election for preserving Tamil Nadu's self-respect and urged voters to support DMK candidates.

Ongoing Investigations into Allegations

Additionally, earlier this week, election security teams and income tax officials conducted searches at several locations linked to Jafar Sadiq, a former DMK official accused of involvement in an international drug trafficking case. Authorities are investigating whether funds may have been collected for distribution to voters, with allegations suggesting control by the Karunanidhi family over the DMK.
