Election Commission Takes Action: Key IPS Transfers in Assam Ahead of Assembly Elections
Significant IPS Transfers Announced in Assam
Guwahati: On Monday, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the transfer and reassignment of five IPS officers in Assam to facilitate the smooth and impartial execution of the forthcoming Assembly elections.
In a directive sent to Assam's Chief Secretary, the Commission mandated the immediate relocation of these officers to various districts after assessing the state's election readiness for the 2026 Assembly elections.
As per the new appointments, Somalin Shubhdarshini, an IPS officer from the 2019 batch, will serve as the Superintendent of Police (SP) for Majuli, while R. Sheetal Kumar from the 2020 batch has been designated as SP for South Salmara.
Anchal Chauhan, also from the 2020 batch, will take on the role of SP in Sadiya.
Additionally, Sudhakar Singh, a 2013 batch officer, has been reassigned as SP of Chirang, and Mohan Lal Meena from the 2016 batch will now serve as SP for Dhemaji district.
These transfers were initiated following a review of the election preparations in Assam, with the Assembly elections set to occur next month.
The Commission has instructed that these changes take effect immediately and has requested the state government to provide a compliance report confirming the officers' joining by 11 am on March 17.
Furthermore, the Commission has specified that officers who have been reassigned should not engage in any election-related duties until the electoral process concludes.
This directive aligns with the Election Commission's established protocols during elections, designed to uphold administrative impartiality and avert any potential conflicts of interest during the voting process.
Assam is scheduled to conduct elections for all 126 Assembly constituencies in a single phase on April 9, with vote counting set for May 4.
The Election Commission continues to issue a range of administrative guidelines and deploy observers to ensure transparency and integrity throughout the electoral process.
