Discovery of the Body

Guwahati, June 17: Authorities discovered the remains of a 75-year-old retired educator, Saira Sultana, buried in her backyard on Rangpur Road in Panjabari on Tuesday morning.

Police Investigation Initiated

A police unit from Dispur arrived at the location around 11:30 am to commence an investigation. They found bloodstains in the bathroom, and a suspicious arrangement of stones in the backyard led them to conduct a more thorough search. Upon moving the stones, they uncovered the body of the elderly woman.

Suspect Arrested

According to a senior police official, "It is believed she was murdered around 1 pm the previous day. Following initial inquiries, we apprehended a suspect named Mohammad Abdul Aziz, also known as Junam, from Palashbari. He was seen exiting the residence and locking the door after the incident."

Connection to the Victim

Authorities suspect that Junam, who hails from Hailakandi, may have had a prior relationship with the victim. "We are also investigating his ties to Hailakandi," the police stated.

Motive Under Investigation

Investigators are trying to determine if the murder was premeditated or motivated by financial or personal reasons.

Last Seen and Suspicious Behavior

Locals reported that Saira was last seen on Monday when she visited a nearby bank. Concerns arose the following day when Junam was spotted leaving her home in a hurry. Witnesses noted that he appeared anxious and was sweating profusely.

“He claimed that the lady was ill and had been taken to a hospital. However, when we checked with local hospitals, there was no record of her being admitted. After we were unable to enter the house and noticed the door was locked, we notified the police,” recounted a neighbor.

Ongoing Investigation

The investigation is ongoing, and forensic examinations are currently being conducted.
