Suspension of Opposition MPs

New Delhi, Feb 3: On Tuesday, the Lok Sabha witnessed the suspension of eight Opposition Members of Parliament due to what was described by the Chair as 'unruly behaviour'.

The suspended MPs include Gurjeet Singh Aujla, Hibi Eden, C. Kiran Kumar Reddy, Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, Manickam Tagore, Prashant Padole, Dean Kuriakose from the Congress party, and S. Venkatesan from the CPI(M).

This decision followed the House's reconvening at 3 PM after several adjournments. Dilip Saikia, who presided over the session, identified the eight members for their disorderly actions.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju proposed a resolution for their suspension for the remainder of the Budget session, which is set to conclude on April 2.

The resolution was passed through a voice vote amidst ongoing disruptions, leading to the adjournment of the day's proceedings.

In his remarks, Rijiju stated that the members had shown 'utter disregard' for the authority of the House and its Chair.

He accused the MPs of tearing papers, throwing them towards the Chair, and attempting to climb onto the Secretary General's table. The Chair subsequently named the members for their conduct.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had authenticated an article in the Lok Sabha referencing former army chief M M Naravane's unpublished memoir, but this did not resolve the ongoing impasse, resulting in a brief adjournment.

The suspensions are likely to escalate tensions between the Opposition and the government, which have been heightened by Gandhi's inability to cite an article based on excerpts from Naravane's memoir regarding the India–China conflict of 2020.

Since Monday afternoon, the Lok Sabha has experienced continuous disruptions following Gandhi's denial of permission to reference the article.

Congress members contend that the issue pertains to national security and deserves discussion, while the Chair has insisted that references to unpublished materials are not allowed.

In response to the suspensions, Congress MPs, led by Rahul Gandhi, protested outside the Parliament, accusing the government of suppressing Opposition voices.

Opposition leaders later announced that the suspended members would persist in their protest outside the House.

The Budget session has faced numerous adjournments recently, with this latest confrontation further complicating the likelihood of normal proceedings in the Lok Sabha.
