ED Links Mehul Choksi's Son to Money Laundering Case
Allegations Against Rohan Choksi
In a significant development regarding the money laundering case against fugitive businessman Mehul Choksi, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) has claimed for the first time that his son, Rohan Choksi, was actively involved in the alleged crimes. This assertion was made before the Appellate Tribunal for Prevention of Money Laundering Act (ATFPA) in Delhi. Sources indicate that Rohan Choksi filed an appeal against the seizure of a property located in Mumbai, which the ED had confiscated in 2018. He contended that the property belonged to their family trust and was purchased in 1994. However, the ED informed the tribunal that Mehul Choksi had reportedly transferred the property to his son in 2013 to safeguard it amid fears of fraud being exposed.
Evidence of Involvement
The ED has stated that evidence points to Rohan Choksi's involvement in the money laundering operations. Notably, Rohan's name has not yet appeared in any FIR or charge sheet. Mehul Choksi fled India in 2017, facing allegations of causing significant losses to Punjab National Bank. He is currently incarcerated in a Belgian prison, with extradition proceedings initiated against him by India. The ED has seized numerous valuable assets linked to the Punjab National Bank fraud case associated with Choksi, amounting to approximately ₹2,565 crores, which are connected to him, his companies, related entities, and family members.
Details of Seized Properties
According to officials, the seized assets include residential flats located in prime areas of Mumbai. One of these flats is situated in Dadar East and is registered under Rohan Mercantile Private Limited, a firm associated with the case. Another property, located on Walkeshwar Road, is registered in Rohan Choksi's name.
