ED Files Petition Against Mamata Banerjee in Supreme Court Over Raids
ED Takes Legal Action Following Raids on Political Consultancy Firm
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has submitted a petition to the Supreme Court concerning the recent raids on the political consultancy firm I-PAC. The central investigative agency is seeking an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). This development follows the ED's petition filed in the Calcutta High Court, which is scheduled for a hearing on January 14.
In its petition to the High Court, the ED accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of obstructing the agency's investigation. It was alleged that during the raid at the residence of I-PAC director Pratik Jain in Kolkata, sensitive documents were removed from the agency's custody. The ED claimed that the leader of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) received assistance from the police and unlawfully interfered with a legitimate search operation.
ED's Allegations and High Court's Response
The central agency stated that the Chief Minister, with the help of state police, forcibly removed digital devices, electronic storage media, and crucial incriminating documents from the ED's lawful custody. However, the Calcutta High Court denied immediate relief to the ED. Earlier in the day, the West Bengal government filed a petition in the Supreme Court, urging that no orders be passed without hearing the state's arguments. This petition was filed to ensure that no adverse orders are issued against the petitioner without a hearing.
Meanwhile, I-PAC condemned the ED's raid, asserting that the agency has set a troubling precedent. Nonetheless, it expressed its commitment to fully cooperate and continue to engage in the process with complete adherence to the law and respect for the legal framework. I-PAC emphasized that it has always maintained the highest standards of professional integrity in all its operations. Despite the events of yesterday, the organization remains dedicated to continuing its work with unwavering focus and accountability, driven by the same purpose that has guided it from the beginning.
