Chandigarh: A significant upheaval occurred in Punjab's political landscape on Friday when the Enforcement Directorate (ED) launched simultaneous raids at various locations, including the official residence of Cabinet Minister Sanjeev Arora. The ED officials arrived at the government bungalow in Sector 2 around 7 AM, accompanied by a heavy security presence and a convoy of approximately 20 vehicles. Around three dozen personnel from the CIA and Special Forces cordoned off the area. The formal search operation commenced at 7:25 AM, conducted under the provisions of the PMLA 2002. The agency is investigating four locations linked to Sanjeev Arora and his associates in Chandigarh and the Delhi NCR region. Sources indicate that this operation is an extension of a larger investigation that began two days prior, which involved raids on builder Ajay Sehgal, Mohinder Singh, and other business figures.
Ongoing Investigations and Political Reactions
Simultaneously, the ED's raid on the ninth floor of the Western Tower in Kharar, Mohali district, concluded late Friday night after approximately 40 hours. Investigations continued at the residences and offices of businessmen Nitin Gohal and Preetpal Singh Dhindsa. Reports suggest that the ED team left Dhindsa's residence around 11 PM, while the operation at Gohal's premises wrapped up between 12:30 and 1 AM. However, officials have not confirmed any arrests. It has been reported that the ED officials exited with several bags and documents, but no official statement regarding seizures or arrests has been released, adding to the suspense surrounding the case.
The Punjab government and the Aam Aadmi Party have labeled the ED's actions as politically motivated retaliation. Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann criticized the central government and the BJP on social media, pointing out that this is the third time in a year and the second time in a month that the ED has visited Arora's residence, yet nothing has been found. He emphasized that Punjab is a land of gurus and martyrs that cannot be subdued by any force. Mann accused the ED and BJP of attempting to intimidate opposition leaders, intensifying the political atmosphere in the state.
Connections to Builder Network Under Investigation
According to sources, the ED initiated significant actions against individuals connected to the builder and business networks in Punjab and Delhi NCR two days ago. The investigation appears to be extending its reach to Sanjeev Arora and his close associates. The agency is scrutinizing alleged money laundering, suspicious transactions, and financial records related to companies. While officials have refrained from drawing any conclusions, the increasing number of raids indicates that the scope of the investigation has expanded.
During the ED raids, security in the Sector 2 area of Chandigarh was exceptionally tight. Public access around the minister's residence was restricted, with police and security agencies surrounding the entire vicinity. Media personnel and local residents gathered outside from morning until late evening, but no one was permitted to enter the premises, heightening the buzz in political and administrative circles.

Currently, the ED has not confirmed any arrests. However, sources suggest that the agency is examining financial documents, electronic devices, and transaction records. If serious irregularities are uncovered during the investigation, the likelihood of further questioning and arrests in the coming days cannot be ruled out.
