Opening Round Disappointments

Brazilian badminton player Jonathan Matias and Beiwen Zhang from the USA faced early exits in their respective matches at the BWF World Championships 2026 held in New Delhi on Monday. Both athletes were defeated in straight games during the opening round.

Matias lost to Malaysia's Leong Jun Hao with scores of 21-19 and 21-15 in the men's singles Round of 64. Meanwhile, Zhang was outplayed by China's Wang Zhiyi, who won 21-12 and 21-13 in the women's singles.

Matias Discusses His Match and Aspirations

Following his defeat, Matias expressed his enjoyment in competing against a highly-ranked player and emphasized his commitment to promoting badminton in Brazil. He stated, "It was a great experience to play against one of the top 30 players. I felt I had a chance in this match, but I am determined to make badminton popular in Brazil. I faced a lot of pressure, but I gave it my all."

In the first game, Matias kept the pressure on Leong, staying close in score until the Malaysian pulled ahead to win 21-19. Leong then took control in the second game, securing his advancement to the Round of 32, where he will face China's Li Shifeng.

Zhang Reflects on Her Performance

Zhang, on the other hand, noted that while she felt physically prepared, she struggled to perform at her best against Wang. "I was pleased with my physical condition, but I made too many mistakes during the match. I had trained hard leading up to the tournament, so I am somewhat satisfied with my preparation," she commented.

Wang dominated the match from the start, winning the first game 21-12 and finishing with a 21-13 victory in the second game. The Chinese player will next compete against Malaysia's Letshanaa Karupathevan in the Round of 32.
