Dhubri, Aug 31: A driver was trapped in the wreckage of a dumper for almost eight hours following a head-on collision involving two vehicles on National Highway 127B at Moamari in Assam's Tamarhat early Monday morning.
The driver, named Sabiruddin Sheikh, hailing from Kachari Gaon in Tamarhat, was ultimately rescued after an extensive operation conducted by police and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel.
Sheikh was reported to be in critical condition and was transported to Dhubri Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) for urgent medical care.
The collision involved a stone-laden dumper and an empty dumper, which crashed into each other on the four-lane highway around 1:30 am. A witness recounted, 'The driver was stuck inside for hours.'
The force of the impact caused one of the vehicles to overturn, trapping Sheikh within the severely damaged cabin.
Upon receiving reports of the accident, police and SDRF teams quickly arrived at the scene to initiate the rescue operation. Initial attempts to free the driver were unsuccessful, as he remained ensnared in the wreckage.
After several hours of effort, Sheikh was finally extricated, nearly eight hours post-accident.
The lengthy rescue operation raised concerns among local residents, who gathered at the site as emergency responders worked diligently to assist the driver.
The dumper involved in the incident has the registration number NL-01 AH-5176. Further information regarding the circumstances surrounding the collision is still pending.
