Dramatic Altercation Overshadows India A vs Sri Lanka A ODI Match
Intense Finish at Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium
The ODI Tri-Series clash between India A and Sri Lanka A concluded with a thrilling finish on Monday, June 15, at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium. However, it was the events following the match, rather than the Super Over outcome, that captured the spotlight.
India A struggled to meet the 18-run target set by Sri Lanka A, finishing at 9/0. Tensions escalated when Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became embroiled in a confrontation with Sri Lankan players, particularly Vishen Halambage, who allegedly provoked the young player as he left the field after the match, which was played in dimming light.
Escalation of Tensions
The situation intensified when Sooryavanshi pushed Halambage, leading veteran wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella to step in as a mediator to avert further conflict. Suryansh Shegde also got involved as emotions ran high, prompting teammates from both teams to intervene and restore calm before the situation escalated further.

Investigation and Sanctions
The altercation led to an investigation, with referee Pradeep Jeyapragash suggesting financial penalties for several players involved. Reports indicate that both Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Vishen Halambage could face fines equivalent to 50% of their match fees.

BCCI's Stance on Disciplinary Actions
As the ongoing ODI tri-series featuring India, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan is not under ICC sanction, the recommendations based on reports from umpires Shantha Fonseca and Prageeth Rambukwella were sent to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Sri Lanka Cricket for final approval.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified that the board would not interfere in the disciplinary proceedings, emphasizing that it has no jurisdiction over matters that fall under the match officials' authority.
"There is a lot of speculation on social media about the BCCI considering action. However, the BCCI is not the authority in such matters," Saikia stated.
Sri Lanka A's Response
Following the incident, the Sri Lanka A team held an internal discussion regarding player conduct. Both teams reportedly convened an emergency meeting to stress the importance of discipline and sportsmanship. The Sri Lanka Cricket Board expressed regret over the incident and moved to endorse the referee's sanctions to maintain the tournament's integrity.
Final Thoughts from BCCI
Devajit Saikia reiterated that umpires and the match referee are the ultimate authorities regarding on-field behavior, and the BCCI cannot intervene or override their decisions. He stated, "The BCCI does not have the authority to take any action or interfere with the conduct of a game. Whatever happened was part of the game, and under BCCI rules and ICC regulations, the board has no role to play in such matters."
"The responsibility lies with the match referee. If anything goes wrong, the match referee will take a call, and the umpires will take a call. There is already a system in place," he added.
India A Advances to Final
In the meantime, India A secured their place in the final after defeating Afghanistan A by 101 runs on Wednesday in Dambulla. The opponent for the title match will be determined after the final league game between Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A on Friday.
