Documentary 'HARGILA' Highlights Community Efforts in Bird Conservation

Celebrating World Environment Day with 'HARGILA'
Guwahati, June 6: To mark World Environment Day, the short documentary titled “HARGILA – The Greater Adjutant Stork” has been made available for viewing on YouTube. This film is directed by Dr. Parthasarathi Mahanta, a senior officer in the Assam police and a filmmaker.
The documentary showcases a remarkable conservation initiative from Assam, focusing on the Greater Adjutant Stork, known locally as Hargila, which is among the most endangered bird species worldwide.
Produced by Mina Mahanta and Indrani Baruah, the film narrates the inspiring tale of grassroots conservation efforts led by women from the villages of Dadara and Pasaria, who played a crucial role in saving the Hargila from extinction. Central to this narrative is Dr. Purnima Devi Barman, a renowned conservationist and Whitley Award recipient, whose relentless advocacy changed local attitudes towards the bird and united the community in its protection.
Previously listed as one of the 20 most endangered bird species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the Hargila faced significant threats from habitat loss and negative public perceptions. However, through innovative conservation strategies that engaged rural women in protecting nests, organizing community events, and promoting environmental education, the species is now experiencing a slow recovery.
“This film transcends the story of a single bird; it embodies a movement, a transformation, and the strength of local initiatives,” remarked Dr. Mahanta. “It illustrates how ordinary individuals, particularly women, can become remarkable guardians of wildlife.”
The documentary has garnered significant acclaim and has been featured in nine film festivals, including the Mumbai Short Film Festival 2022, S.O.F.A. Film Festival (Animals, Wildlife, Environment, Conservation) 2022, and the Wildlife Conservation Film Festival 2022, among others.
Additionally, “HARGILA” received a Special Mention at the National Film Awards 2022, recognized for its emotional resonance, visual storytelling, and environmental significance.
The documentary is now available for free viewing to audiences worldwide at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMpJrkc7mK4
Through its compelling narrative, “HARGILA” not only documents a conservation success story but also celebrates the resurgence of an ecological symbol and the unwavering spirit of women-led activism. It serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that collective community efforts can have on the environment and the intrinsic bond between culture, nature, and survival.
