Identification of Victims in Air India Crash


According to reports, DNA testing has successfully identified the 31 individuals who tragically lost their lives in the Air India plane crash that occurred in Ahmedabad on June 12. The identification process was confirmed on Sunday.


So far, the remains of twelve victims have been returned to their families following the identification.


Dr. Rajnish Patel, a professor of surgery at BJ Medical College and Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, stated that DNA matching is still ongoing for several other victims.


The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which was headed to London’s Gatwick airport from Ahmedabad, crashed just 33 seconds after takeoff, resulting in the deaths of at least 265 individuals. This incident is being regarded as the worst aviation disaster globally in the past decade.


There were 242 passengers on board the flight, with one individual surviving despite sustaining impact injuries.


The passenger list included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian national, along with crew members.


While the total number of fatalities on the ground remains unconfirmed, authorities reported that 265 bodies have been sent for postmortem examination. This figure includes at least four medical students who perished when the aircraft struck the BJ Medical College hostel.


On Saturday, Alok Kumar Pandey, the commissioner of relief and secretary of the Revenue Department, mentioned that the Gujarat government has reached out to the families of 11 foreign nationals.


Pandey also noted that death certificates are being issued immediately to facilitate the process for the families.


On Friday, the black box from the Air India aircraft was located on the roof of the hostel building. The Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, part of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, has commenced an investigation into the incident.


The Directorate General of Civil Aviation announced on Friday that it has mandated enhanced safety inspections for all Boeing 787-8 and 787-9 aircraft within Air India’s fleet. The airline operates 33 such aircraft, and the inspections will cover fuel systems, engine controls, cabin air compressors, oil systems, hydraulics, and flight control systems.
