On Sunday, Gujarat's Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi announced that the DNA of former Chief Minister Vijay Rupani matched the remains found at the site of the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, three days after the incident. The DNA report, received at 11:10 AM, confirmed the identification. His last rites will take place in Rajkot, with officials from the Chief Minister's Office present at the city's civil hospital to facilitate the transfer of his body.
Family Informed About DNA Results
Health Minister Rushikesh Patel stated that the family members of the former Chief Minister have been informed about the DNA matching results. He shared with reporters that Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited Rupani's residence to convey the news to the family and assured them of the state government's assistance in the arrangements for the funeral in Rajkot. The family will decide when to take possession of the body.
Details of the Plane Crash
Rupani was among the 241 passengers aboard Air India Flight 171, which crashed shortly after takeoff for London on Thursday afternoon. Only one British citizen survived the incident. The government has reported that the black box has been recovered, and efforts are underway to decode the data to determine the cause of the crash. The aircraft went down just seconds after takeoff, colliding with a building within the BJ Medical College campus in Meghani Nagar, approximately one kilometer from the airport runway. The impact created a fireball that severely damaged the dormitory building and resulted in multiple fatalities on the ground, including several MBBS students.
