DMK's Demand for Women's Reservation

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), led by MK Stalin, has called on the central government to clarify its roadmap for implementing 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. The party insists that this quota should be based on the current number of members in the lower house, rather than linking it to future delimitation processes. This request was raised by DMK's Rajya Sabha MP Tiruchi Shiva during an all-party meeting convened ahead of the Parliament's monsoon session, which begins on Monday.

Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Shiva stated that the DMK supports the women's reservation bill based on the existing strength in the Lok Sabha, but they seek further clarity on the delimitation issue. He emphasized that the delimitation process should not adversely affect the southern states and urged the government for more transparency on this matter. Shiva suggested that if there are negative implications for the southern states, the implementation should be postponed for 25 years.

Previously, the DMK had decided to continue opposing the delimitation bill in its current form, which is population-based and linked to women's reservation. The party will await a new bill and make decisions based on the recommendations provided within it. The Congress party has also announced its opposition to the delimitation bill, stating that efforts will be made to maintain unity among the opposition on this issue. Additionally, Congress will oppose the proposed bill that aims to synchronize the tenures of MPs, MLAs, chief ministers, and the Prime Minister.

On April 17, 2026, the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill failed to pass the floor test in the Lok Sabha. This bill aimed to increase the number of parliamentary seats and expedite the implementation of 33% reservation for women. It received 298 votes in favor and 230 against, which was significantly short of the two-thirds majority required by the Constitution. It is important to note that the government needs a special two-thirds majority in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha.
