DMK Opts Out of Upcoming India Block Meeting Amidst Political Tensions
DMK's Withdrawal from India Block Meeting
Under the leadership of MK Stalin, the DMK has decided to skip the upcoming India Block meeting scheduled for June 8 in New Delhi. This decision highlights a growing rift in the relationship between the DMK and Congress, particularly following the dramatic political shifts after the Tamil Nadu assembly elections. The controversy ignited when Congress chose to support actor Vijay's TVK in forming a government in Tamil Nadu, despite their long-standing alliance with DMK. DMK leaders expressed strong disapproval, publicly accusing Congress of betrayal and stabbing them in the back, claiming that the party has jeopardized decades of partnership for political gain.
This discord has also become evident in Parliament. A significant indication of the deteriorating relations was when DMK MP Kanimozhi recently wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, requesting separate seating arrangements for DMK MPs, citing the changed political landscape after distancing from Congress. This move is widely regarded as the first formal expression of the rift within the India Block.
Senior leaders from the opposition India Block are set to convene on June 8 in the national capital to discuss their joint strategy against the BJP-led NDA government and to strengthen opposition coordination ahead of crucial political contests. Approximately 15 representatives from various opposition parties are expected to attend this meeting at the Constitution Club. The gathering comes in the wake of significant defeats for two major component parties of the India Block, the Trinamool Congress in West Bengal and the DMK in Tamil Nadu, during the recent assembly elections.
Meanwhile, former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee are likely to participate in this crucial opposition meeting, even as the party grapples with unprecedented internal turmoil, with many of its legislators rebelling against the leadership. Banerjee is expected to raise concerns regarding alleged attacks on TMC leaders and seek support from the component parties of the India Block on this matter.
Sources indicate that other leaders attending the meeting will include Uddhav Thackeray, head of Shiv Sena (UBT), Akhilesh Yadav, president of the Samajwadi Party, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, and Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. The Aam Aadmi Party has already distanced itself from the India Block publicly and is not expected to participate in the meeting. According to sources, this gathering is seen as an effort to enhance coordination among opposition parties in light of shifting political equations across various states and recent electoral setbacks.
