DMK Faces Internal Turmoil in Tambaram: What’s Behind the Controversial Candidate Switch?

Internal Strife in DMK's Tambaram Constituency

Chennai: The DMK party is currently grappling with significant unrest in the Tambaram Assembly constituency. This turmoil follows the decision to not renominate the incumbent MLA, S.R. Raja, which has sparked intense protests among party members, revealing deep divisions within the local organization as elections approach.

In a surprising turn of events, the party has chosen Dr. Krithika Devi, a newcomer to the political arena, as the candidate for Tambaram. This decision has caught many off guard, especially Raja's supporters, who anticipated his renomination due to his established presence and successful electoral history in the area.

Frustration is growing among grassroots workers, who perceive the leadership's choice as an abrupt and unjustified change.

Several party members express concerns that replacing a seasoned leader at this critical moment could undermine established networks and hinder campaign efforts.

Tensions escalated late Saturday night when hundreds of Raja's supporters gathered in Irumbuliyur, marching to the home of senior DMK leader and Treasurer T.R. Baalu, where they staged a prolonged and noisy protest.

The demonstrators chanted slogans demanding the removal of Dr. Krithika Devi, arguing that she lacks familiarity with the constituency.

One supporter voiced their frustration, stating, "She does not understand the local dynamics, the number of wards, or even the ward secretaries. How can she run for office?"

They implored the party leadership to reconsider their decision and reinstate S.R. Raja, with some even pleading, "We fall at your feet; please allow SR Raja again."

The situation intensified when S.R. Raja himself arrived at T.R. Baalu's residence for discussions, engaging in a private meeting with the senior leader.

After the meeting, T.R. Baalu addressed the crowd, saying, "I have known Raja since his childhood. I did advocate for him. However, the party president, M.K. Stalin, has made a decision, which likely has valid reasons. There is a chance that Raja will be assigned another role."

Despite the leadership's intervention, discontent persists among Raja's supporters, with sporadic protests continuing in various parts of the constituency.

This incident has introduced a layer of uncertainty to the DMK's campaign in Tambaram at a pivotal time.

As the Assembly elections draw near, the evolving situation is under close scrutiny, as ongoing dissent within the party could challenge its prospects in this crucial constituency.
