Chennai, Oct 28: Teeta Saravanan, a councillor from the DMK in Vellore, was taken into custody by Puzhal police in Villupuram, Tamil Nadu, on Wednesday. He faces allegations of making threatening statements directed at Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, specifically referencing the 2025 Karur stampede.

A specialized police unit apprehended him at the home of ACK Premkumar, who serves as the deputy organizer for the DMK’s Central District Youth Wing in Villupuram.

Premkumar was also arrested for allegedly harboring Saravanan, who was being actively sought by law enforcement following his controversial remarks.

The arrests were prompted by a video that purportedly captured Saravanan making these comments outside Puzhal Central Prison. His remarks regarding the Karur incident sparked significant backlash, leading police to take action against him.

This incident unfolded when former School Education Minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi was brought to the prison after being arrested on bribery charges.

Supporters of the DMK had gathered outside the prison, chanting slogans against the Tamil Nadu government. During this gathering, Saravanan allegedly stated, “If only we had finished him off back in Karur, would things have reached this state?”

He reportedly reiterated this statement to another individual nearby. The comments quickly spread across social media, drawing scrutiny to the Councillor's behavior.

Puzhal police have filed charges against Saravanan under four sections, including those related to obstructing public officials, intimidation, and disturbing public order.

In the wake of his remarks, three special teams were formed to locate him after he reportedly went into hiding.

Reports indicate that Saravanan attempted to mislead authorities by claiming he was traveling to Bengaluru. However, police successfully tracked him down to Premkumar’s residence in Villupuram, where he was arrested.

Premkumar's arrest is linked to allegations that he provided refuge to Saravanan during the police search. The police action is focused on Saravanan’s alleged comments made outside the prison and the related offenses. The video evidence played a crucial role in prompting the police investigation.
