DMK's Optimism Ahead of Vote Counting
As the counting of votes for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections commenced on January 31, T.K.S. Elangovan, the spokesperson for the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), expressed strong confidence that the party would secure approximately 130 to 140 seats, thereby forming the government. Addressing the situation, Elangovan stated that the DMK would achieve over 40 percent of the votes, ensuring a clear majority. He emphasized that the DMK alone would win around 130 to 140 seats, leading to the formation of the government.
Political analysts believe that the election results in Tamil Nadu are largely predictable, given the high voter turnout and favorable exit polls indicating a strong possibility for the ruling DMK-led coalition to remain in power. On the morning of January 31, a robust three-tier security arrangement was implemented ahead of the vote counting for the recently concluded assembly elections. Numerous security personnel were stationed at the entrances of counting centers, barricades were set up, and thorough vehicle inspections were conducted.
Loyola College is among the counting centers where Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) are being used to tally approximately 48 million votes cast in the elections. Other centers include Queen Mary College and Anna University. The results of the voting, which took place on April 23 in Tamil Nadu, are highly anticipated. Political parties across the state are speculating whether the incumbent DMK will secure a second term or if the BJP-supported All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) coalition will capitalize on anti-incumbency sentiments. While most exit polls predict a victory for the DMK, some surveys suggest that the party led by actor-turned-politician Vijayakanth (TVK) could influence the assembly's balance.
Tamil Nadu is one of four states (Assam, West Bengal, Kerala) and the Union Territory of Puducherry where elections are being held on April 23. The second phase of voting in West Bengal is scheduled for April 29. The counting process began at 8:00 AM with postal ballots, followed by EVM counting starting at 8:30 AM. Phase-wise results are being updated in real-time on the ECI-NET platform and the official website of the Election Commission.
