Dilip Gavit's Ambitions After Commonwealth Games Success
Indian para-athlete Dilip Gavit is targeting two gold medals at the upcoming Asian Para Games after achieving a remarkable victory in the 100 m T47 event at the recently held Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. India secured a total of 16 medals in athletics during the CWG 2026, which included three golds, seven silvers, and six bronzes. Notably, all three gold medals in para-athletics were won by Indian athletes, with Gavit setting a new CWG record by finishing the men's 100 m T47 race in 10.71 seconds.
Gavit's Goals for the Asian Games
In a conversation with a media outlet, Gavit expressed his satisfaction with his performance and his determination to excel further at the Asian Games, aiming for gold in both the 100 m and 400 m events. He acknowledged the difficulties faced in Glasgow and appreciated the support provided by the government to athletes. "I am thrilled to have completed the 100 meters at the CWG, representing my country and setting a record while winning gold. At the Asian Games, my goal is to secure gold in both the 100 meters and 400 meters," he stated. He also mentioned the significant backing from the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI), the Sports Authority of India (SAI), and the central government regarding training, nutrition, and recovery, despite the challenging cold weather in Glasgow.
Mohammed Basil's Silver Medal Achievement
Fellow para-athlete Mohammed Basil, who earned a silver medal in the same event with a time of 10.83 seconds, shared similar sentiments about the weather conditions in Glasgow. "This was my first competition, and I am very pleased, although the weather posed some challenges. I look forward to returning for future competitions," he remarked.
India's Overall Performance at CWG 2026
The 2026 Commonwealth Games were conducted in a compact format, which resulted in the exclusion of several major events where India typically excels, such as shooting, wrestling, and badminton. India concluded the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in fourth place on the medals table, amassing a total of 39 medals, which included 13 golds, 17 silvers, and nine bronzes.
Looking Ahead to the 2030 Commonwealth Games
India has officially embarked on its journey to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Amdavad, with the Commonwealth Games Flag being ceremonially handed over during a spectacular Closing Ceremony that celebrated the conclusion of the Glasgow 2026 Games and looked forward to the historic centenary edition.
