Digital Attendance System Introduced in Indian Parliament

The Indian Parliament has taken a significant step towards modernization by implementing a digital attendance system using multimedia devices. This initiative, led by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, replaces the traditional manual attendance registers with a more efficient and accurate method. MPs can now record their attendance directly from their seats using various secure options, including thumbprints and digital signatures. While the Lok Sabha has embraced this innovative approach, the Rajya Sabha continues to use the old system for now. This upgrade is part of the government's broader efforts to streamline parliamentary processes in the newly constructed building.

Introduction of Digital Attendance in Parliament

Members of Parliament have commenced recording their attendance online using a new multimedia device (MMD) system. This digital upgrade, initiated in the current session, is part of the government's broader efforts to streamline processes in India's newly constructed Parliament building.

Transition from Manual Registers to Digital Tablets

Until recently, MPs were required to sign a physical attendance register before entering the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha chambers. Following the inauguration of the new Parliament building, this method has been replaced by a stylus-based attendance system via tablets positioned at the entrances. The newly implemented MMD system now allows MPs to register their attendance directly from their designated seats, saving time and avoiding queues.

Multiple Secure Attendance Options

The MMD system offers various options for MPs to confirm their attendance. They can utilize their thumbprints, enter a PIN, or swipe a multimedia device card. Alternatively, MPs can select their names from a drop-down menu on the tablet, sign digitally with a pen, and press the 'submit' button to record their attendance. This digital approach enhances efficiency and accuracy, ensuring prompt attendance recording.

Led by Om Birla

This initiative has been launched under the guidance of Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, a strong advocate for a paperless Parliament. The tablets installed at each MP's seat, initially intended for accessing parliamentary documents and the day's agenda, now serve a dual purpose for attendance recording. While the Lok Sabha has adopted this new system, the Rajya Sabha will continue with the traditional attendance method for the time being.
