Did Trump Really Mediate Peace Between India and Pakistan? Here's What He Claims!
Trump's Bold Claims on India-Pakistan Relations
New York: On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump reiterated his assertion that he played a crucial role in halting the conflict between India and Pakistan, warning both nations that the US would refrain from engaging in trade if hostilities persisted.
Following four days of severe cross-border missile and drone strikes, India and Pakistan reached an agreement on May 10 to cease hostilities.
Trump emphasized the significance of the situation, stating, "The most critical aspect is not whether they might possess nuclear weapons, unlike the discussions surrounding the Middle East, particularly Israel and Iran," during a press conference after the NATO summit in The Hague.
He acknowledged that both India and Pakistan are armed with nuclear capabilities.
Trump mentioned that he had multiple discussions regarding trade with both countries.
He recounted, "I told them, 'If you continue fighting... it was escalating dangerously, especially after that last attack.' I made it clear that we wouldn't proceed with any trade agreements if they were at odds with each other."
He claimed that when the countries insisted on pursuing a trade deal, he firmly replied, "We’re not engaging in any trade deal."
Additionally, he noted that Pakistan's Chief of Army Staff, Asim Munir, visited the White House recently, stating, "The general from Pakistan was in my office last week, and he made quite an impression."
Trump praised Prime Minister Modi, calling him a "great friend" and a "remarkable individual," asserting that he facilitated dialogue between the two nations, stating, "We won’t finalize any trade deal if fighting continues. They expressed a desire for a trade agreement, and we managed to avert a nuclear conflict."
Trump has frequently claimed credit for easing tensions between India and Pakistan.
However, India has consistently asserted that the agreement to halt hostilities was achieved through direct communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries.
In a recent 35-minute phone call with Trump, PM Modi firmly reiterated that India does not accept mediation and that the military discussions to cease hostilities were initiated at Pakistan's request.
