Diarrhoea Outbreak in Odisha: Rising Death Toll and Health Response

Diarrhoea Outbreak Claims Lives in Jajpur District
Bhubaneswar: The diarrhoea outbreak in Jajpur district, Odisha, has resulted in two confirmed fatalities as of Wednesday, following the announcement of another death by officials.
Since Tuesday, more than 250 individuals have reported symptoms of this waterborne illness.
According to District Collector P Anvesha Reddy, a 70-year-old man was pronounced dead upon arrival at Vyasanagar Hospital, while a 34-year-old man died at the Danagadi Community Health Centre on Tuesday.
Initial reports indicate that the outbreak began in the Dharmasala area on Tuesday, leading to numerous hospital admissions across the district. Residents from Dharamshala, Jajpur Road, Danagadi, and surrounding areas have also reported diarrhoea symptoms.
The Director of Public Health, Nilakantha Mishra, noted that between 40 to 50 patients have successfully recovered and returned home after receiving treatment.
However, some individuals remain in critical condition due to severe diarrhoea, with over 20 patients referred to SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack.
Regarding the fatalities, Mishra stated, "Two individuals have reportedly died from diarrhoea, but the precise cause of death is under investigation."
It is suspected that the outbreak may have stemmed from food poisoning, as many fell ill after attending a feast, Mishra added.
In response, two state-level health teams have been dispatched to the affected district.
Medical staff and doctors from Jajpur Medical College are on-site to provide care, and sufficient medical supplies have been prepared.
Mishra also mentioned that arrangements will be made for additional medical personnel if necessary.
He plans to visit the district with another health team to assess the situation further.
