Recent Developments in Dhubri

Guwahati, June 16: Following the recent communal disturbances in Dhubri town, triggered by the discovery of suspected cattle remains near the Hanuman temple, Assam Police have apprehended 50 individuals as of Sunday night, according to officials.

Inspector General of Police (Law and Order), Akhilesh Kumar Singh, stated that the situation in Dhubri has now returned to normal. He mentioned, “The situation is completely under control. We have established continuous patrol units throughout Dhubri to maintain peace and prevent any further incidents.”

In response to concerns regarding provocative graffiti that emerged in the area, IGP Singh confirmed that one suspect has been detained for questioning.

“One of the earlier graffiti pieces included the phrase 'Nabin Bangla' (New Bengal),” he noted, adding that the investigation is still in its preliminary stages.

However, he urged caution against making hasty assumptions. “It’s premature to conclude whether the same individual is responsible for both the recent and previous graffiti,” the police official remarked.

Forensic teams are currently examining evidence related to the graffiti, and police anticipate further insights in the upcoming days. Authorities have urged the public to remain calm and refrain from spreading rumors as the investigation progresses.

Earlier on Sunday, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that the state government would persist in its efforts to combat anti-social elements, which have deep historical roots since post-Independence.

The Chief Minister stated, “We have already initiated actions. Assam is a critical state. Anti-national activities will not cease merely due to my warnings, as these issues have persisted since Independence. Therefore, our campaign against this will continue.”

Tensions in Dhubri heightened on June 8 and 9 after suspected cattle remains were discovered at a temple, leading to unrest. Police have filed five FIRs concerning three distinct incidents, including alleged cow slaughter, rioting, and the dissemination of misinformation.

Initially, thirty-eight individuals were arrested in connection with the communal tensions.
